The company has always been and continues to be committed to loving and serving seniors by nurturing mind, body, and spirit, while providing support and peace of mind to their families. This nurturing lifestyle is provided in beautiful residential settings by respectful and well-trained care professionals, skilled in the art of service.

It is our belief that seniors are to be honored and treated with the utmost respect and dignity. At Voralto, we consider it a privilege to care for our seniors and support their families.

Company History

Established in 1977 and headquartered in Houston, TX, Colonial Oaks Senior Living is a 40-year-old best-in-class senior living owner / operator / developer whose executives have a combined 140+ years of experience in the senior living industry.

1977-2016

The original Colonial Oaks Senior Living Company was incorporated in May 1977 by Robert Caplan and his partners. Its initial purpose was to develop and operate communities for low to moderate income seniors. Fast forward 39 years to 2016, and the company has been very successful in fortifying its reputation across Houston, TX. Mr. Caplan’s philosophy of senior living – meeting individual needs, preserving residents’ dignity, and honoring their families – is the foundation upon which the Colonial Oaks culture of care was built. The company has become well-known for truly caring for its residents and employees. We are forever grateful for the solid foundation laid by Mr. Caplan in creating a culture of dignity and service within Colonial Oaks Senior Living.

2016 & Beyond

In the Fall of 2016, Carl Mittendorff became Chairman and CEO of Colonial Oaks Senior Living.  Mr. Mittendorff is committed to building upon Caplan’s work as he brings the Colonial Oaks culture of loving care and services across the nation through strategic acquisitions and new development. His commitment is to marry the unmatched Colonial Oaks Senior Living 40-year history and longevity of yesterday with the research, innovation, and technology of tomorrow. This isn’t the first time that Mittendorff has led the growth of a senior living company. In fact, he spent the prior decade leading the growth of another company from 4 communities to 38 communities, eventually operating across 21 states. Colonial Oaks is uniquely poised to embrace new innovations in eldercare while building upon its 40-year foundation of loving and serving seniors.

We are committed to softening the difficult times our neighbors face including illness, disease, heartbreak, disability, and loss. We soften these times with joyful hearts using the tools of empathy, education, training, humor, and above all, love.

Invite

We invite those from all backgrounds and beliefs to join our communities including prospective new residents, their loved ones, and new caregivers and staff.  We don’t simply invite once and stop; by inviting again and again, we show a firm commitment to our mission.

Believe

We have faith that through our hard work and commitment to our mission, miracles will happen. These miracles are beyond our wildest dreams, and they will serve our residents, their families, our fellow team members, and all those with whom we come in contact. The communities we build and rebuild each day are our “miracle factories”.

Purpose

Meet Our Leadership

Carl Mittendorff, Chairman & CEO (2016)

Passion

Senior Care has been a passion of Carl’s ever since he watched his grandfather, a decorated WWII Marine Corps Tank Commander, pass away in a Medicaid bed at a nursing home. At the time, Carl was a young man just starting out in business, and there was only so much he and his family could do to care for “Papa” with the resources the family had.  Carl’s mother, a long time single mother working hard to support her family, acted as Papa’s caregiver in the evenings while she worked her full-time job during the days.  Eventually, Papa’s care needs were too severe, and the family had to move him into a state-funded facility.  Soon thereafter, Carl devoted his career to serving seniors.

Purpose

Carl knows that his purpose in life is to serve.  In his heart, this extends towards his employees, the residents they serve together, and to their families. He is a firm believer that his residents’ and employees’ lives should be as engaging and fulfilling as possible; he genuinely loves carrying out his purpose of service both professionally and personally.  Carl routinely serves as a speaker and industry expert in senior housing conferences, newsletters, and other media.

Service

Carl applies this philosophy of service beyond his professional life, and his free time is often completely absorbed by active involvement in youth ministry and frequent community service projects and missions at home and abroad.  One of his new initiatives for Voralto in 2018 is to create a monthly service program in each of the company’s market areas.  Each quarter, the company’s employees, residents, and their families and friends will be encouraged to join together to “love and serve their neighbors” in a company-participated event.
